Some infrastructure and development projects with cycling infrastructure in or near NorthBUG.
The Toombul Shopping Centre Site: A piece in the local news outlet “Echo News” suggests a development application from the new owners will be submitted towards the end of this year. Since it’s next to the Kedron Brook Greenway and the developers keep mentioning “improved transport and pedestrian connections”, it’s worth keeping an eye on. Click here for the news item and here for the developers’ project web page, where you can register for updates, though community consultation has not yet begun.
Land Buybacks with Fire Trails: In the MBRC area, some land buybacks under the Moreton Bay Council “Land Buybacks for Environmental Purposes Program” are having fire trails installed. More parks and forests will be handy if the proposed new planning scheme goes ahead, which includes buildings up to 15 storeys around the Arana Hills Kmart, 12 storeys around the Ferny Hills shops, and 3 to 5 storeys in between. Maybe some bicycle infrastructure will come with that. This may be of some interest for those of us who ride the fire trails in our forests and national parks. The Youngs Crossing Upgrade: Like the Gateway North Cycleway extension, this project is the utter edge of the NorthBUG area. The project is the installation of a high-level flood-proof bridge at Youngs Crossing near Petrie. This project includes a lot of new and improved cycling infrastructure, mostly on-road cycling lanes, as well as better pathways. Old Northern Road at Joyner (or maybe it’s Youngs Crossing Road there) gets new on-road bicycle lanes and connections on each side of the new bridge. That would make on-road pathways from where Old Northern Road crosses Cabbage Tree Creek to the One Mile Creek at Joyner, after which there will only be a missing kilometre of on-road bicycle lane at Joyner and (still) a kilometre missing behind the shopping centre at Albany Creek. That would make about fifteen kilometres of on-road bicycle lanes on Old Northern Road. There’s a pathway alongside the road for most of that distance too. Should be finished at the end of next year.
