The Journey So Far

For years, the community has called for a safe, low-stress bikeway connecting the CBD to the northern suburbs. Between 2014 and 2021 the Queensland Government constructed the first 4 stages of a protected bikeway from Bowen Hills through to Wooloowin. Since then Brisbane City Council has spent thousands of dollars on four rounds of community consultation for three different routes to continue the bikeway though to Kedron Brook.

In early 2024, Council established a Community Working Group to review alternatives, including the concept design for an extension of the North Brisbane Bikeway on Dickson Street to Junction Rd, with additional traffic calming measures on Sydney and Jackson Streets. However, following the working group’s approval of the project, Councillor Julia Dixon and Member for Clayfield, Tim Nichols MP, cited “broader community concerns” to insist that the bikeway be redirected west at Price St and along Kent Road instead, even though that route had been rejected years earlier – including by Cr Dixon’s predecessor.  Construction on the Price Street and Kent Road route is yet to commence.

Why Dickson Street Matters

Many people currently ride bicycles and scooters on Dickson Street.  Presently, the protected bikeway on Dickson St ends 500m before Eagle Junction. A high-quality cycle connection on Dickson St is needed beyond where the protected bikeway finishes.  Dickson St provides a direct connection to:

·    Transit & Hubs: Eagle Junction Train Station and Toombul.

·    Employment: Workplaces at Brisbane Airport and Nundah.

·     Regional Networks: The Jim Soorley Bikeway, Gateway North Bikeway, and Moreton Bay Cycleway.

While a confident rider might brave riding with motor vehicle traffic on Dickson Street, the lack of protection remains a major barrier for many people.

Our Vision: A Safer, Connected Community

We believe Dickson Street should be accessible to everyone, not just the most confident riders. High-quality, protected bikeways encourage healthy transport choices that fit into daily routines—a goal that aligns directly with government policy priorities.

There is strong local support for safe routes that connect our homes to shops, schools, and workplaces. With your help, we can ensure a bikeway link includes Dickson Street.
